Save Money On Your Energy Bill This Summer

Energy Efficiency
home cooling basics

Summer is almost here and with it comes higher temperatures and stifling humidity. Don’t pay more than you should to keep cool. Use these energy-efficient tips for summer to save money without sacrificing comfort.

Install A Programmable Thermostat

One of the best ways to save money on your energy bill year-round is to install a programmable thermostat. This will allow you to program your air conditioner not to run as often when you are away from home. According to the Department of Energy’s Energy Savers Guide, you can save as much as 10% a year by adjusting your thermostat up or down 70 - 100, according to the season, for eight hours a day. Just set it and forget it! The only thing you’ll notice is the savings on your monthly electric bill.

You can get a programmable thermostat at your nearest home improvement store for around $50 and they are easy to install.

Turn Down The Temperature On Your Water Heater

Most homeowners don’t realize that water heating is the second-largest energy expense in their homes accounting for 14% - 18% of your energy bill. Think about it. Your water heater operates non-stop 24-hours a day whether you use hot water or not.

To save money, turn down the temperature on your water heater to 1200F. This will still provide hot water but will not require your water heater to work as hard. Read our water heater blog for more information on how to save money on water heating for your home year-round.

Have Your Air Conditioner Serviced And Seal Air Leaks

Unfortunately, most homes in the U.S. only have the minimum required heating and cooling system. This also holds true for insulation. So, while you’re not going to burn up this summer, you’re probably paying more than you should to cool your home, even if it’s brand new.

There are two things you can do to fix this problem. The first is to have your air conditioner professionally inspected and serviced before it gets too hot. This will help it operate more efficiently and will ensure that no problems have developed over time that could ruin your system. This should be done every year, especially if your air conditioning system is older. Give Shine Air a call and we will be happy to arrange a time to service your AC.

maintaining your air conditioner

A better option would be to replace your air conditioner with a high-efficiency system. These units provide the same level of comfort but do so using less energy, which saves you money. If this sounds like a good option for you, be sure to call Shine Air and we will be happy to arrange a time to work with you.

Finally, be sure to seal any air leaks in your home. What you can’t see may be costing you money so, it’s important to prevent conditioned air from escaping your home. Here are some simple tips you can use to help prevent air loss:

* Weatherstrip doors and windows.

* Caulk and seal air leaks where plumbing, ducting, or electrical wiring comes through walls, floors, ceilings, and soffits over cabinets.

* Install foam gaskets behind outlet and switch plates on walls.

* Use foam sealant on larger gaps around window trims, baseboards, and other places where air may leak out.

* Don’t forget to check for open fireplace dampers and make sure they properly closed when not in use.
